Readings to catch the genius of ancient Greek and modern political writers. A six-week course that compares the constitutions of Athens and Sparta through the eyes of Thucydides and Xenophon; pairs the Declaration of Independence with a selection from de Toqueville's Democracy in America; and concludes with Plato's account of Socrates on his way to jail and Martin Luther King writing from jail.
To assure everyone's active participation, class size is limited to ten. A close reading of the texts before each class is an explicit obligation.
Class is limited to 10 members.
SCRIBNER JELLIFFE graduated from Dartmouth and obtained an MA from NYU in history before teaching in schools in this country and abroad. As an adjunct to teaching, he has led Great Books discussion groups.
