This study group will cover a brief history of the Chinese language, from the ancient pictograph to present day. We will read Lao Zi, Confucius and master scholars whose teachings were recorded in classic Chinese. Romanized Chinese brought the world closer to China. Since 1958 the phonetic alphabet of Pinyin took place as a mass educational endeavor. We will explore the Pinyin system to gain some insight into speaking and reading Chinese.
Each session will be divided into two parts. The first half will be for lecturing and reading of history and literature. The second half will be for learning to read with Pinyin alphabet. At the same time, writing Chinese characters will be presented. Members are encouraged to participate as much as they wish. Homework will be mostly practice and practice. Members will be encouraged to check the internet for research and enrichment.
Class is limited to 20 members.
LOUISE GOW grew up in Beijing, China and came to the U.S. to study. She has a BA degree from Seton Hill University and did graduate work at Drew University, Hofstra and New York University. She also took a course on Teaching Chinese at St. John's University. She was a public school teacher for twenty-one years. Since retirement she has made five trips to China for family visits and touring.
