The Story Ballet has come out of the wings and is back in fashion. Now that the era of Balanchine and Graham is receding into history, it is safe to enjoy a story of reality or legend. Even of princesses or plain folk.
The writer tells a story encoded in words which is received by the mind. Then it translates back into the writer's version. It is a black and white mental exercise. The choreographer tells the same story from very different perspectives. He uses non-verbal movement which comes richly enhanced by costumes, scenery, lighting, music, and very live bodies.
Knowing the story before hand, it will be interesting to discuss the differences and perspectives of the new presentation. It is kind of Rashomon of the senses.
Class is limited to 20 members.
HERB KUMMEL is a reformed dancer, still learning to speak in long sentences and full paragraphs, instead of merely communicating deep feelings in single gestures. When he got down on one knee, his future wife immediately nodded yes. No single word spoiled the moment.
