Through lectures illustrated with slides, this study group will focus upon five major artists working in the 15th through the 17th centuries in the Netherlands. Jan van Eyck, Pieter Brueghel, Peter Paul Rubens, Frans Hals, and Rembrandt Van Rijn will be examined, with special emphasis placed upon their stylistic development and their works as reflections of the social, historical and religious events of the time. The major artistic movements in Italy and their importance for these artists will also be discussed.
Class is limited to 20 participants.
J. Richard Judsonreceived an AB from Oberlin College, an MA from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. He was a professor at Smith College, and is W.R. Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
