In this course, we will review events of China's past starting with the decline of the Ching Dynasty (mid 19th Century) through the struggles of Sun Yat Sen, Chiang Kai Shek, Mao Zedong, and Deng Xiaoping to return China to preeminence on the world scene.
In the last 25 years, still under a communist government, China has dramatically improved its economy, brought prosperity to millions of its citizens and transformed its cities into modern, urban centers.
What does this mean to the United States and the world? Through readings - The Fabulous Concubine by Chang Hsin Hai, River Town by Peter Hessler, The Rise of China (Foreign Affairs) and current news articles we will explore this question.
Class is limited to 25 members.
Lorna Chang graduated from Goucher College in 1952 with a major in philosophy. In 1955 she married David Ping Chung Chang, born in Shanghai, son of diplomats and teachers. Through her in-laws, readings and travels to China she developed an interest in and knowledge of China. Before his death in 2001, David worked for Nike, Inc. bringing Nike's shoe production to China in the 1980's.
