Crusin' Tunes

Patricia Norton

Wednesdays 12:00 - 2:00 PM

March 23 through May 11, 2005
(this class will not meet on April 20th )

 To Be Determined

Following the course of the cruise, we'll listen to music that has touched the banks of the rivers. We'll be busy; from Amsterdam, where the International Gaudeamus Festival of New Music is held, to the Köln concerts of pianist Keith Jarrett, the songs written about the Lorelei, the organ of Passau, the home of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály... and that's without mentioning Vienna! A combination of lecture, music and discussion will keep class lively. We will at least briefly consider the history behind the music. We will not aim for depth, but float over music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century eras of Western classical music, as well as the hymn tradition of Martin Luther, a little jazz and New Age.

Participants going to Holland/Hungary in May 2005 will have precedence.

PATRICIA NORTON is a musician who has experience playing piano, organ, guitar, bassoon, saxophone, French horn and percussion. Curiosity about the world and the luxury of time to do research draws her to ILEAD, where she has facilitated several courses. Accustomed to doing relatively in-depth studies, Patricia is looking forward to the challenge of a survey-type course.
