This course will look at the causes and effects of some of the many forms of lightning in a simple and practical way. One inexpensive book will be used, along with some brief segments of video documentaries. A "lightning machine" will bring a spark of excitement to the class.
We will look at Benjamin Franklin's original invention of the lightning rod two and a half centuries ago, as well as some current studies using rocket-triggered lightning and laser-powered lightning "rods." We will also explore the myths, fears, and misinformation that surround every discussion of lightning. By the end of the course you will have a clear understanding of this capricious and awe-inspiring force. You will also know how to keep it out of your computer and what you should do when outdoors or inside during a thunderstorm.
Class is limited to 25 members.
WILL PRIESTLEY has devoted much of the past eighteen years to the study of lightning while providing lightning protection systems for homes, schools, golf courses, churches, farms, communication towers, police and fire departments, and military operations.
