Prints And Printmaking: An Introduction To The History And Techniques

Brian D. Cohen

Wednesdays, 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
April 7 & 14, 2004
Two Rivers Print Making Studio

The printing of pictures, however, unlike the printing of words from movable types, brought a completely new thing into existence...It is hardly too much to say that since the invention of writing there has been no more important invention than that of the exactly repeatable pictorial statement (i.e., the print).

- William Ivins, Prints and Visual Communication

Offered in association with the Two Rivers Printmaking Studio, Looking at Prints will examine the history and technique of prints from 1440 to the present. We will discuss the political and social impact prints have had on society, will learn to identify particular printmaking techniques, and will explore landmarks in artistic expression in printmaking through readings, lectures, group discussions, and visits to a major collection of original prints. We will also look at contemporary printmaking, at definitions of the "original print," and at the work of several printmakers currently working in the Upper Valley.

Class is limited to 12 members.
