Church of Christ - Rand Room
Through lectures, listening to selected musical examples, and study of musical scores and documents, we will trace the history of Western Classical music as it developed for use in the various Christian religious traditions, beginning with plainchant and ending with the early 20th Century. There will be a CD of required listening for each session and some reading. Each session will conclude with a discussion of issues raised. An ability to read music will be helpful, but not required. No commitment to any of the various faith traditions under discussion is assumed or necessary.
Class is limited to 15 participants.
Ernest Drown is the Organist and Choir Master at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College (the "White Church"). He holds a BA in Music from Harvard and a Master's from the Episcopal Divinity School. His course "The History of Christian Hymnody" was a popular ILEAD offering last year. He performs in the area on the harpsichord.
