Discover again "for the first time" the 150 year-old work by Victor Hugo which has inspired countless films as well as a glorious musical. Les Miserables, like Hugo, arguably the most illustrious public figure in French Literature, is the sum of many parts. Using the unabridged edition, we will examine specifically the characters of Jean Valjean, the bishop Myriel, Fantine, Cosette, Marius, and Inspector Javert, with an emphasis as well on the presence of "soul" in Hugo's epic composite. Close reading and lively discussion encouraged.
Class is limited to 15 participants.
