HISTORY OF SPAIN TO 1700

Fundamental to an understanding of Spain’s history is an awareness of its distinctive geography and topography; changing demography is no less important.  Pre-historic, legendary "Hispania," Roman, Visigothic, and late medieval Spain are the background for the Islamic presence and "final" reunification of the nation in 1492, and the "Empire."

ROBERT RUSSELL is a Hispanic scholar who taught at Dartmouth College from 1957 to 2003.  He has lived, studied and taught in Spain, and is well acquainted with Spain’s varied history, terrain, and peoples.
