Plays can deliver unique understanding of the tumultuous recent history of countries in Central Europe. This course will bring a taste of the riches which the writers and the theater activity in this region have supplied. A selection of playwrights from Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia and Croatia can help us to react as they did to the experiences of the late 20th century in this part of the world.
We will read a play a week, with an introductory lecture at the first meeting and full class discussion thereafter.
Class is limited to 20 members.
MARTHA MANHEIM has a doctorate in comparative drama from Columbia, with a focus on Russian drama. She taught a course related to the one described here at Dartmouth in the early 90’s, and she has taught several courses at ILEAD in the past.
