September 27 through November 15, 2004
Wheelock Terrace

Rebecca West was best known for her epic work on Yugoslavia:  Black Lamb and Grey Falcon.  She was also a novelist, essayist, critic and a prolific correspondent having written an estimated 10,000 letters. Her life spanned most of the 20th century and she was acquainted and corresponded with many well-known figures of that era.  A recent publication, Selected Letters of Rebecca West, spans the years from 1907 to 1982, shortly before her death. These letters trace her development as a person and as a writer. To read them, as we will do together, is to get a view of the emergence and maturity of one of the most fascinating literary personalities of our time.

The course format will be discussion with introduction and summaries to be provided by the leader.  Assignments for reading will correspond to the sections of the assigned textbook and will be the subject of each class discussion.

Class is limited to 20 participants.
