“What is always needed in the appreciation of art,” Alice Walker has written,“ is the larger perspective. Connections make, where none existed before ... the common thread, the unifying theme through immense diversity ...”
What common threads can be drawn in discussion when readings include a Greek tragedy (Oedipus) and a story by Flannery O’Connor; a comedy of Molière (The Misanthrope) and Tolstoy’s Death of Ivan Ilych; or Montaigne and Henry Adams writing on the subject of their education? In conclusion, what binds Nietzsche as Zarathustra and the painter, Velasques, in what they want the blind to see?
The search for threads requires that participants read each text actively and critically. Class is limited to twelve members to insure everyone’s full involvement.
Class is limited to 12 members.
