The Senate:Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Thomas Simon

Tuesdays 9:30 – 11:30 AM
September 28 through November 16, 2004
D.O.C. House

The Senate: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow will include the achievements of the Senate in its antebellum golden era of Clay, Calhoun and Webster; the Reconstruction and Progressive eras of the Johnson impeachment and Lafollette populism; the post World War One leadership of Lodge and Aldrich; followed by the post World War Two leadership of Taft and Johnson.  Against this backdrop of the Senate’s past we will compare the Senate of today led by Lott/Frist and Daschle to determine the current relevancy of the Senate and the leadership (or lack thereof) it can be expected to provide in the years ahead.

The Senate: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow will include little known Senate facts and statistics along with discussions of the Senate’s personalities and rivalries:  investigations from Teapot Dome to Watergate and the great issues and historic speeches debated on the floor of the Senate, from its inception in 1789, to the present day.

Class participants will be expected to read the handouts to be prepared to participate in class discussions.  In addition, class members will have the opportunity to present brief biographies of individual senators selected for their unique contributions to the lives of all us.

Class is limited to 20 participants
