History Mysteries

Chica Maynard and Joan Wilson

Mondays 9:30-11:30 AM
September 27 through November 15, 2004
D.O.C. House

Steven Saylor’s book, Roman Blood, deals with mystery and life in Rome in 80 BC.  Ellis Peters’ book, One Corpse Too Many, is the second chronicle of Brother Cadfael and 12th Century Benedictine monastic life in England.  Peter Tremayne’s Subtle Serpent is the story of 6th C. Christianity in Ireland.  Alan Gordon writes his Thirteenth Night as a “sequel” to William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

In each case we will not only discuss the mystery but also what was going on during the periods of these novels.

Class is limited to 20 participants.

CHICA MAYNARD graduated  from Swarthmore College with a major in history.  She feels that reading mystery stories set in an historical period is the best to discover what was really going on.

JOAN WILSON graduated from Brown University with a major in music.  She has been playing Medieval and Renaissance music on the recorder and viola da gamba for many years.  She has always loved to read mystery books, especially those set before modern times.
