Language at Play

George Montgomery

Tuesdays 9:30 – 11:30 AM
September 28 through November 16, 2004
D.O.C. House

Language is more than communication—a purveyor of information, and a conveyor of love, wonder, anger and emotions of every sort. But we will use it as a toy. Our focus will be to study and use language as a tool of innocent amusement by observing, exchanging  and creating palindromes, reversals, anagrams, pangrams, crostics, nonsense verse,  word games, and language oddities of all sorts. We will use a textbook as well as materials gathered by the study leader.

This is not a lecture course. With the help of the study leader, participants should be prepared to present and engage in particular types of language play and show some of their own examples. The group will attempt to invent new forms of language play.  We look forward to 8 weeks of fun.

Class is limited to 20 members.

GEORGE MONTGOMERY has been amusing himself and pestering his family with language play for nearly a half-century.  This will be his 9th ILEAD course on various subjects.
