France is a country that fascinates Americans. We admire its history, beauty, and lifestyle, but often cringe when the French disagree with our policies and actions.
In this course we will examine contemporary France, how it ticks, and why it sometimes takes contradictory positions to our own. We will review the political system, economy and business, and social services. We will discuss culture, ideas, and the way of life of ordinary people. We will also consider life in other Francophone areas such as Quebec and West Africa. The purpose is to better understand France and its influence on the world, and provide a framework helpful to the consideration of daily events.
Course format is lectures, discussions, and readings, all in English. Participants will be encouraged to give brief oral reports on topics selected in conjunction with the class leaders. No background in France is necessary to enjoy and profit from the course, but those with experience may share them with us. Since many new topics will be covered, participants who have taken our previous courses on France are welcome. Reference books will be recommended, and weekly reading packets provided.
Class is limited to 20 members.
