"What is always needed in the appreciation of art," Alice Walker has written, "is larger perspective. Connections made, where none existed before . . . the common thread, the unifying theme through immense diversity . . . ."
What common threads can be drawn in discussion when readings include a Greek tragedy (Oedipus) and a story of Flannery O'Connor; a comedy of Moliere (The Misanthrope) and Tolstoy's Death of Ivan Ilych; or Montaigne and Henry Adams writing on the subject of their education? In conclusion, what binds Nietzsche and Zarathustra and the painter, Caravaggio, in what they want the blind to see?
The search for threads requires that participants read each text actively and critically. Class is limited to insure everyone's full involvement.

Scribner Jelliffe graduated from Dartmouth and obtained an MA from NYU in History before teaching in schools in this country and abroad. As an adjunct to teaching, he has led Great Books discussion groups.
