Tuesdays 10-12 Noon
September 30 through November 4, 2003
Hood Museum of Art
This hands-on art history class will be taught at the Hood Museum of Art in conjunction with the Fall exhibition, Coming of Age in Ancient Greece: Images of Childhood from the Classical Past.
Each weekly discussion will focus on the following themes: the family at home, mythological stories as religious guides, ideas of sexuality and love, preserving portraiture, real and ideal, and dealing with death. A comparison of life in Pompeii and Herculaneum, Italy will be explored as additional understanding of the ancient mind.
Class is limited to 12 participants.
Jeanne Shafer has a Master's in art history from Indiana University, has taught some twenty years, and utilizes these courses to further her artistic growth. Jeanne is also a jeweler and enamelist teacher at the Ava Gallery and League of NH Craftsperson, and a part-time dental receptionist and assistant. This will be Jeanne's second art history class taught at the Hood. This is a "dream come true" to see museum sculpture and painting to make art and its richness come alive to the curious observer.
