Dartmouth and IGERT
Dartmouth College is located in Hanover, New Hampshire, in the western part of the state bordering Vermont on the Connecticut River. Dartmouth provides graduate students with opportunities for rigorous study and independent research within an environment dedicated to close student-faculty interactions and a commmitment to understand the world in which we live. Dartmouth's global perspective fits well with the National Science Foundation's Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT), an initiative that prepares scientists and engineers to effectively address global issues through an interdisciplinary curriculum and traineeship.
The Dartmouth IGERT supports the development of an interdisciplinary graduate program in polar sciences.Dartmouth has a long tradition of northern studies dating back to the noted Arctic explorer, chsolar and founder of Dartmouth's Northern and Polar Studies Program, Vihjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962). Our unique research and training opportunities are due to Dartmouth's collaborative partnership with the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and Greenlandic institutions and Inuit leaders. CRREL, located adjacent to Dartmouth College, is one of the premier centers of scientific expertise in polar research worldwide. Our relationship with CRREL offers students access to mentors and important new research in polar science.
Thanks to the Dickey Center for International Understanding and its Institute of Arctic Studies, we have developed academic, research, and cultural collaborations with Greenland. Students pursue intensive field training in a country where science, policy and indigenous issues of the North converge.
Collectively these partners and experiences provide rigorous training in polar and related sciences and produce young scientists with an advanced knowledge of the role of science in policy and of the ethics of conducting research with Native people.
