Your Role as a Staff/Faculty Facilitator

The curriculum used by Intergroup Dialogue at Dartmouth facilitators will be created by OPAL borrowing from materials created by the Program on Intergroup Relations at the University of Michigan. Facilitators will be provided with an in-depth facilitation guide for all sessions, all supplemental reading materials, packets for all participants with a journals, readings assignments, and worksheets, and all necessary presentation supplies. Co-facilitators are encouraged to meet before the sessions to plan and following the sessions to debrief.

Since IGD relies on utilizing the history for and potential of conflict between and among social identities as a tool for learning, themes for the different dialogue sections depend on and are chosen by the co-facilitators. Facilitators will also help guide the choice of location, dates, and times.

Time Commitment

  • IGD will run in fall '16 and winter '17. A facilitator can sign up to facilitate a section for both or either terms.
  • An IGD section will run for 7 sessions starting the week of Sept. 19 and concluding the week of Oct. 31, and includes a pre-sessions retreat (9/18) and mid-way retreat (10/15). Dates for the winter sections are TBD.
    • Each section is co-facilitated by two members of faculty or staff.
    • Each session runs 90 minutes, meets once a week, and involves at least one hour of preparation time and about a half-hour to debrief with co-facilitator. The approximate weekly time commitment is about 4 hours.
  • A facilitator training workshop to be completed before the end of the summer term (or end of fall term for those facilitating a section for winter '17).
  • OPAL will host monthly check-in workshops for facilitators. These meetings will serve as a space for facilitators to come with questions, share positives stories, and receive feedback on challenging situations. These meetings are optional.
  • Compensation is available for faculty and staff facilitators. Details about compensation will be shared during training.

Application deadline: Aug. 22nd.
