Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu is celebrating its Centennial anniversary this 2002-2003 school year. We were founded as the Pukwana club in 1903, joined Sigma Nu Fraternity in 1907. In 1961, the house went local in a protest of discriminatory membership policies and existed as Sigma Nu Delta until 1986, when we rejoined the national Sigma Nu organization.

When asking the brothers about what Sigma Nu means to them, several answers surfaced. The first was a common theme:
"Sigma Nu has provided me with a true home on campus. It provides a setting where I can be entirely at ease with myself and those around me, without ever feeling self-conscious or uncomfortable. I feel happy and comfortable with them, knowing that I can count on them for companionship and support when I need it."
"Sigma Nu is a place where I can hang out with some of my friends and relax from school and other difficulties."

Between brotherhood events that encourage eating as many Taco Bell tacos as possible, and trips to the gym or to IM soccer games to burn off the extra calories, we plan events like our Early 80s and RAVEN parties, as well as faculty discussions to reach out to the community as a whole. Sigma Nu is truly a place where brothers and friends can relax, recreate, and always have a good time.

Others make mention of how brotherhood binds us despite differences of opinion that naturally occur. Our advisor of nearly a decade, John Pryor '84, categorizes the Sigma Nu in this way:
"The Brotherhood supports each other like no other group I've encountered at Dartmouth. They argue, they debate, and they can passionately disagree with each other, but despite all that they are there for you when you need them."

A recent alumnus mentioned other ways in which we are unique:
"Sigma Nu is an organization that is a support system of a group of men I respect and love. Also, in my opinion, the most inclusive, diverse, and respecting group on campus."

Members of our brotherhood hold leadership/membership positions on sports teams, in performing groups, and a plethora of student organizations. Furthermore, many members are able to take on leadership positions within the Fraternity, offering opportunities to grow as a leader and a team builder. Sigma Nu is an Honor Fraternity, and as such defines itself not by the activities of its members, but by the quality of their character. We emphasize our commitment to Sigma Nu National's creeds of Liberty, Fraternity, Democracy, as well as Love, Truth, and Honor; principles which guide us as a brotherhood. Furthermore, our website: (www.dartmouth.edu/~sigmanu) contains materials about our chapter including a statement of purpose released to the Dartmouth community in the spring of 2001.
