Lecture Capture using AirSketch and Relay

Overview

Implemented in Fall 2011 for EARS 006: Environmental Change, the main objective in this innovation was to capture real-time illustrations (like drawings on the board) for later review by students.  The problem being addressed was two fold.

  • Camtasia Relay only captures the presenting computer’s screen, thus any drawings made on the board are lost once class ends.  Not only did the instructor want to capture those drawings, he also wanted the references to items on the screen to be visible to viewers of the Camtasia recordings.
  • It was important to the instructor that he not be tethered to the podium. So while a drawing application on the lecture computer and the mouse would capture the illustrations, they would also restrict his movement.

The elegant solution was using AirSketch for iPad, which allowed the instructor to use the iPad to control the slides, draw on top of them, and have the whole thing captured by Camtasia Relay.  Since AirSketch operates wirelessly, he was able to roam freely around the room while using it.   In a class of nearly 300 students, a side benefit was the ability to project the illustrations on a screen much larger than would have been possible on a traditional white- or blackboard.

Feedback

Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive.  There were a few who were ambivalent and a couple ( < 2%) who found it more distracting than anything else, but most found it helpful.  From my course evaluations:

” I think the technology in the class was a great aspect of the course. Instead of being able to just hear the lectures be recorded, we can see the notes that the professor makes as well if we were not able to go to class or needed clarification.”

I had a guest lecturer use the system, but he found it to be too distracting. It takes practice to bring the instructor’s focus back to the students in the room, rather than focusing on the iPad in your hand.

Aegean Prehistoric Archaeology Site Rewrite

Course: CLST011 – Intro Classical Archaeology

Project Site: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~prehistory/aegean/

Overview: For this project we created an interactive digital textbook for  Dr. Rutter. He requested that a site he started in 1996 be updated and moved into a medium that would be easy for an instructor to update, shareable with individuals outside of the institution and easy for multiple professionals to enhance.

We decided on WordPress as a platform and added a series of plugins to provide him with the requested functionality. GRAND Flash Album Gallery was used to display the large number of photo albums associated with the site lessons. The Tooltips plugin was used to create a hypertext glossary of terms, and the Wiki and WP Symposium were installed to allow contributors to share information, have dialogs about the content and receive newsletters from the site authors.

Tools: Snagit, WordPress, Photoshop, Dreamweaver

Plugins: GRAND Flash Album Gallery, Broken Link Checker, Tooltips, Wiki, WP Symposium

The Brothers Karamazov Site Rewrite

Course: WRIT003 – Composition & Research II

Site Link: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~karamazov/resources/

Overview: For this project we recreated the functionality provided in the Brothers Karamazov MOO and static website created for student exploration of the novel into an interactive blog. Quick Chat and Digress.it were used to replace the MOO functionality and Wiki tool and comment enabled blog pages replaced the old HTML4 table driven webpages. The WP Accessibility Access Keys plugin is used to make the site more accessible.

Tools: Snagit, WordPress, Audacity, Photoshop, Dreamweaver

Plugins: Custom Contact Forms, Digress.it, Quick Chat, Wiki, Accessibility Access Keys

Project: Oral History Wiki

Overview: The course focuses on the experiences of Latino-Mexican, Central American, Cuban, Dominican and Puerto Rican – transnational migrants living in the United States.  The main applied assessment instrument in the course is the creation of an oral history project.  While the students really enjoy the project, the instructor has a personal interest in also making the knowledge available for a wider public.

The Educational Technology Group worked with the faculty member to convert the traditional paper submissions for the oral history projects into a technology rich online activity. Each student was provided with a private wiki within the learning management system to develop his or her stories. Once the stories were finalized the student sites were made available to the rest of the class for review and comment. The students also used the wiki to present their project experience to the class at the end of the term.

The student wikis will be exported from the learning management system and posted to a departmental resource site that will be made available to the public.

  • Course: LATS 44/ANT 33 – Crossing Over: Latin Migrant Roots and Transitions
  • Tools: Blackboard, Learning Objects Wiki tool, Adobe Acrobat, Movie Maker, Audacity
  • Assessment Method: Individual student Wikis graded with a comprehensive rubric
