Lateral Thinking: Art of the 1990s
This exhibition features forty contemporary artists from North, South, and Central America; Cuba; China; and Europe. The artists include Matthew Barney, Vanessa Beecroft, Roman de Salvo, Zhang Huan, William Kentridge, Byron Kim, Jean Lowe, Vik Muniz, and Cindy Sherman. The works in this exhibition defy categorization by style, school, or media, but a number of key ideas recur throughout the show-ideas such as the body; the construction of identity (gender, personal, social, ethnic); the role of the artist; and our relationship to everyday occurrences and objects.

This work is one of a series of paintings and drawings that Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) created during the 1960s on the theme of racial injustice and the struggle for civil rights. Depicting a group of young students anxiously clutching their textbooks under the protection of several armed soldiers, this gouache relates directly to the bitter confrontations in southern states that followed the court-ordered desegregation of public schools.
