This presentation will discuss the DSM-IV-TR Outline for Cultural Formulation, a concise clinical tool to bring four domains of cultural issues into the clinical encounter to enrich the differential diagnosis and treatment plan. The four domains are 1) cultural identity, 2) cultural expressions and explanations of illness, 3) cultural stressors and supports, and 4) cultural elements of the relationship between the clinician and patient. At the conclusion of this presentation, the audience will be able to understand the definition and rationales for cultural competence and to understand and utilize the four domains of cultural issues to enrich the differential diagnosis and treatment plan. Part of the DMS series "Peace of Mind: A Series on Stigma, Cultural Psychiatry, and Mental Health Among Medical Professionals."
