Hellas Planitia is a circular plain, approx. 2000 km. in diameter. It is a depressed basin and lies 4 km below the datum surface and is the lowest known feature on the surface of Mars. This is the only area where the atmospheric planet is high enough for liquid water to exist. Hellas shows virtually no interior detail.
