Mars Interactive Map

One of the challenges when studying Mars is learning the major landmarks and understanding their relationship to one another. The Interactive Mars Map, provides a way to locate landmarks on the surface of Mars and to become familiar with the geography of Mars. What is shown is a Mercator projection of the surface of Mars. Depending on your browser, as you move the cursor across the map a label will appear at certain areas of interest. If you click on these areas, a description and a picture of the area will appear at the bottom of the page.

To help locate areas on the map, you may also want to look at this image, Mars Atlas. This map shows the surface of Mars divided into 30 named quadrants. It also shows where those quadrants appear on the globe of Mars. The map is from the "Atlas of Mars" by Raymond Batson, NASA SP 438.

This link, Historic Mars Map, shows one of the most famous early maps of Mars. This map, by Schiaparelli, dates from 1877.

Also check out, Mars Atlases and Image Finders, for other online atlases.
