Many of you may havenoticed
that your Word 98 documents are
takinga long time to save.Or that
a one page document is over 500K.
Another problem you may have
experienced is whenyou blitz this
Windows 98 document to someone
who is still using Word 5.1, even
though they may have the
converters installed, the converted
document comes up blank.

This is all due not to a virus, but to
the “feature” in Word 98 called

When is “Fast
Save” Not?

Susan Bibeau

Here’s some important Word
98 information.

System OS 9
—continued from page 1

“Auto Updating” permits software
updating directly from Appleand
other vendors. It also can make
your machine go to the net and
check automatically whether
updates are needed.

There are many otherfeatures
worth mentioning — among them
the complete suiteof language kits
as anInstallOption. That means
completesupport for Chinese,
Japanese, Korean, Indic, Arabic,
Hebrew, Russian, and various
CentralEuropeanlanguages like
Polish, Czech, Hungarian, etc. We
have tested some of these
languages successfully. We
particularly like the Central
European fonts like TIMES CE –
whichallow the viewingas wellas
the printing of the macron with
standard installations of
software.~

CDs, etc.
—continued from page 4

DVDs are replacing laserdiscs
since they allow frame access,
multiple language subtitles and
many morefeatures that are of
interest to theeducation market.

Media forDVD-RAM is still rather
expensive — about $30 for a 2.4
gigabyte disk and about $40 fora
4.8 gigabyate disk. This is about 8
times more expensive than using
CD-ROMS forstorage.~

“Fast Save.” It simply isn’t doing it
right.

We recommend that you check
your preferences and turn the
“Fast Save”feature off. To do this,
open Word 98, go to the Tools
menu and open Preferences. Click
on theSave file tab and click in the
box next to Fast Saveto remove
the check mark. This will turn this
“feature” off and save many
people, including yourself, some
big headaches.~

If you are planning a research trip
this year and would liketo take a
laptop computeralong, wemay
have a loaner foryou to use. We
have three Apple G3 laptops that

areavailable and two new iBooks
as well. All are available on a “first
come–first served” basis, so you
should make yourreservation
early. (The iBooks are likely to be
more available than the G3
powerbooks since we share the
latter with SeniorFellows.)

Each powerbook has had
communication software installed
and is ready to connect you to the
internet almost anywhere inthe
world that offers CompuServeor
