has released another
system update,
called System
OS 9 (“OS” stands for operating
system). According to
Apple
it is “the ultimate
update for
anyone
on the
Internet or anyone
who wants to be.” With 50 “powerful” new features it supposedly offers
“astonishing capabilities for
new and advanced users.” As of December
1999 it is delivered installed on all new computers. Users who want to

welcome
to come by and test it out. Our
experience
with various
installations of this systems on some
of our
computers has been mixed. A
good start seems to be an
installation

a fully functioning existing OS
8.6. Installing OS 9 over
it as a so-called “dirty installation” seems to
work
without problems. Installing over older systems has caused us
various headaches, forcing us often to the
final resort of a “clean
installation”—in other words, a complete
removal
of the old system
including special extensions and libraries for
some applications. This will
require reinstallation of some
software, including modem setups and may
require updating other
components of the system.
