Yes, it has happened again! Applehas released anothersystem update,
called SystemOS 9 (“OS” stands for operatingsystem). According to
Appleit is “the ultimateupdate foranyoneon theInternet or anyone
who wants to be.” With 50 “powerful” new features it supposedly offers
“astonishing capabilities fornew and advanced users.” As of December
1999 it is delivered installed on all new computers. Users who want to
upgradeto this system canbuy thepackagefromthe Kiewit Storein a
site licensed version for a littleless than$40.

We haveinstalled OS 9 on oneof ourpublic computers and you are
welcometo come by and test it out. Ourexperiencewith various
installations of this systems on someof ourcomputers has been mixed. A
good start seems to be aninstallationovera fully functioning existing OS
8.6. Installing OS 9 overit as a so-called “dirty installation” seems to
workwithout problems. Installing over older systems has caused us
various headaches, forcing us often to thefinal resort of a “clean
installation”—in other words, a completeremovalof the old system
including special extensions and libraries forsome applications. This will
require reinstallation of somesoftware, including modem setups and may
require updating othercomponents of the system.

WhyOS 9? Apple’s new management has provided thehype. With
Sherlock 2 a great Internet search enginehas finally arrived and will
wean you from AltaVista and various other sites forgood.

OS 9 makes it possible for yourcomputerto be used by multiple users
with individual preferences and privacy levels. Users do not even need to
typein a password, they can just say it. In case of thecomputer ’s
unwillingness to understand youraccent ona lateFriday afternoonyou
still have theoption to type it in.

“Keychain” allows onepassword for almost everything you access with
passwords.
