UPDATE Newsletter

Web Access

Access to the audio and video resources of the LRC is available at:

http://pushkin1.dartmouth.edu

If, for any reason, this server does not respond, a second server (often called a "mirror") is updated daily to reflect the state of the first server. It's available at: http://pushkin.dartmouth.edu

Client Requirements

Web access to these video and audio resources assumes a Dartmouth-configured computer (Mac or Windows) that has the free QuickTime Player installed. The QuickTime Player software may be downloaded from Dartmouth's Software Download pages at: http://www.dartmouth.edu/software.

Video services require high bandwidth, for instance an ethernet connection on campus or DSL or cable modem access off campus. For the latter, Virtual Private Networking (VPN) software must also be installed and configured because a valid Dartmouth IP address is also required. Accessing video via the campus wireless system is not recommended. Off campus modem access will not work at all.

Types of Service

Most video materials currently available on our servers come to the client as "streaming video." When playing a video, a slider can be moved to any point in the video and the streaming process will begin to show the movie at that point. This can take from one to four seconds as the video is accumulated. Then the movie will play normally.

Most audio materials currently available on our servers are downloadable. The server will temporarily download the complete audio file and moving the slider will provide instant restart at the selected point. This is useful for practicing pronunciation or reviewing specific points in a file.

Copyight

IMPORTANT!
All resources on the network are for playback purposes only. It is strictly illegal to download any of these resources to your local computer.

Support

Users who have difficulty with network access to the video and audio resources should call 6-2624 during regular hours. Professional help is available from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. If you require assistance during off hours, please send an email to otmar@dartmouth.edu. Please describe the problem in detail including any error messages and a phone number where you can be reached. Instructors have been advised to refer all problems to the LRC.
