April 23: Dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater mingled with Dartmouth students at a reception celebrating the culmination of the company's campus residency. In addition to a pair of sold-out performances, the company offered an exclusive educational matinee performance for Dartmouth students featuring excerpts from Revelations and Night Creature.

April 11: During their week-long residency at the Hop, the Qawwali Masters from Pakistan brought their beautiful Sufi music to many audiences throughout the Upper Valley. Adam Nayyar from Pakistan's National Council on the Arts was on hand to contextualize Qawwali music and its link

April 5: Following a performance of her Hop-commissioned work-in-progress about class issues, playwright Anne Galjour and director David Dower joined Dartmouth students, faculty and staff for a reception in the East Wheelock residential cluster. Students were excited to gain an inside perspective on Galjour's process and the evolution of the play to be premiered at the Hop this November.

April 3: Omar Sosa's Afreecanos Quartet presented a guest lecture in an Oral Traditions music class. Sosa conducted the roomful of djembe-playing students and encouraged them to explore the connections between rhythm and self-expression. Sensing some hesitation, Sosa invited the class to get on their feet and dance with him. "Let your body flow," he said. "Never stop yourself."

March 4: Piano virtuoso Joseph Kalichstein coached two students in Faulkner Recital Hall in a stimulating master class preceding his performance as part of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio.

March 4: In advance of his sold-out concert in Spaulding Auditorium, legendary flutist Sir James Galway discussed his life and musical career over tea and pastries with invited Dartmouth students.

February 4-9: Renowned funk trombonist/composer/educator Joe Bowie was a featured guest artist for Dartmouth's Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble "Big Band Funk" concert. The charismatic bandleader shared his irresistible passion for music-making with Dartmouth students and Upper Valley community members. During his residency at the Hopkins Center, Bowie presented a rhythm-based team-building workshop for seniors citizens, performed with the Coast at a local school, and participated in a lecture/demonstration for an Oral Traditions music course.

February 2: Chinese New Year is a family affair, a celebratory time of reunion and thanksgiving honoring one's ancestors and community. 2008 welcomes the Year of the Rat! Dartmouth's Chinese Dance Troupe brought this festive holiday to life by performing traditional and original dances reflecting the beauty and grace of this time-honored art form.

January 21-24: Jazz pianist Jason Moran participated in a number of events during his residency at the Hopkins Center, including the MLK Community Lunch Panel, talking to Dartmouth student Arts Ambassadors, working with Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble students, presenting a mini-concert/discussion at a Dartmouth student residence hall and giving a talk on music and visual art at the Hood Museum's Sean Scully's exhibit "The Art of the Stripe."

January 19: Children and adults were transformed by the tapping feet of Doreen Keith's students from Dancer's Corner in White River Junction. From 5 years old to 80 years old, tap students shared a vast array of dances and tap styles encouraging the audience to try a few moves themselves.

January 16-19: At Dartmouth, "the indisputable tap virtuoso of the age" Savion Glover taught a Movement Workshop for campus and community tap dancers; moderated a panel discussion called The Pioneers with Dianne Walker, Jimmy Slyde and Sali Ann Kriegsman; attended a dinner with students; visited a Movement Fundamentals class; and participated in post-performance discussions following his sold-out performances.

January 13: As part of a week-long residency in support of his documentary theater piece "Shadows," Chinese-Australian photographer William Yang shared insights about his creative process and the communities which inspired his work. Yang was joined by multi-instrumentalist Colin Offord, whose live score beautifully accents "Shadows."

January 12: Classical guitar virtuoso Sharon Isbin coached two students in Faulkner Recital Hall during a master class preceding her stellar performance in Spaulding Auditorium.

January 9-10: Hailing from Charlottesville, Virginia, the young (and very hip) bluegrass/folk-rock band Old School Freight Train brought their sweet melodies and lively personalities to Dartmouth for a double bill with the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

November 8-13: During their week-long Department of Music residency, jazz drummer Matt Wilson and his band Arts and Crafts visited classes, jammed with students, presented lecture/demonstrations and, in general, brought joy and jazz education to everyone they met along the way!

October 23: The Zedashe Ensemble shared Georgian culture with members of Amarna, a Dartmouth Undergraduate Society. The musicians were welcomed with a home-cooked meal and, in turn, dazzled their hosts with an intimate demonstration of centuries-old Georgian chants.

October 6: Prior to his band's sold-out performance, John Scofield led a guitar master class in Faulkner Recital Hall. The guitar guru provided feedback and shared words of wisdom gleaned from a life-long career of making and recording music.

July 26-29: Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery came to Dartmouth for a three-day residency, during which they created a sand mandala at the Collis Center and performed "The Mystical Arts of Tibet,"an evening of ancient temple music and dance.
