Brooklyn Rider kicked off their week-long Music Department residency with a rollicking preview concert at FUEL in the Collis Student Center. Playing selections from their latest album "Passport" as well as Schubert and Philip Glass, the versatile string quartet was joined by composer Ko Umezaki, a '93 graduate of Dartmouth's Electro-Acoustic Music Program, on Japanese shakuhachi flute. Umezaki's Dartmouth-commissioned work "cycles...what falls must rise," was premiered during Brooklyn Rider's culminating performance in Rollins Chapel.
Throughout the week, Brooklyn Rider presented a series of lecture/demonstrations in a multitude of classes: The Silk Road, Global Sounds, Composition, and History of Western Art Music. In addition to class visits, Brooklyn Rider spoke with graduate composers about technology in music and worked with the Dartmouth Chamber Music Ensemble in a creative and productive session which included learning and playing (together as a group) Philip Glass' String Quartet #2 'Company'.
