Guidelines for Publishing Dartmouth-Generated Media

These guidelines are intended to help Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students identify when permission is or is not required to publish Dartmouth-generated media on the Internet under the College’s licenses and/or the copyright doctrine of fair use. The guidelines apply specifically to media related to official Dartmouth activities, and to publishing on Dartmouth hosted websites, such as www.dartmouth.edu, or Dartmouth edited websites, such as YouTube. Any questions about these guidelines should be directed to hometeam@dartmouth.edu.

Photographs of scenes and individuals

  • Photographs that are taken by Dartmouth staff as part of their work do not require the permission of the photographer.
  • Photographs that are taken by others require the permission of the photographer.
  • Photographs do not require the permission of the subjects.

Photographs of creative works

  • Photographs of creative works (e.g., a photograph of a painting) that could serve as a substitute for the original work require the permission of the creator.

Videos of performances

  • Videos of student performances do not require the permission of the performing group.
  • Videos of featured student performers require the permission of the performer.
  • Videos of visiting performers require the permission of the performer or performing group.
  • Videos of performances that include third-party recorded music require the permission of the recording company.

Videos of public lectures

  • Videos of public lectures require the permission of the presenter.

Produced videos

  • Videos created by Dartmouth staff as part of their work do not require the permission of the creator.
  • Videos created by others require the permission of the creator.
  • Videos that include third-party recorded music require the permission of the recording company.

Videos of performances that involve union staff

  • Videos that feature or require support from the IATSE local at the Hopkins Center must include the IATSE emblem at the end of the video recording.
