Post-Dartmouth Plans of '06 History Majors

Commencement 2006

06commencement

A number of the History majors from the Class of 2006 responded to a request for information about their plans for life after Dartmouth.  Here is what they had to say:

Natalie Allan:  “This summer I'll be leading hiking trips in Colorado.  In September I will be going to Bangladesh to do research for the Tucker Foundation about an orphanage it intends to sponsor.  In November, I will move to San Francisco, where I hope to get a job in the non-profit industry.”

Liz Allen:  "I'll be in New York City for the summer working at Outward Bound in the expeditionary learning centers for urban students. In the fall, I am getting my Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification in Seville, Spain, before moving down to Northern Patagonia in Argentina to teach English. Ultimately, I would like to go on and get my masters of education and perhaps even go onto education policy after teaching."

Lindsay Barnes:  “A week after graduation I will assume my duties as a reporter and editor for The Hook, the premier weekly newspaper in Charlottesville, Virginia. It is there that I hope to begin a long and productive career in journalism.”

Chelsea Carroll:  "In mid-July I will be moving to Kurihama, Japan. While there I plan to pursue an online master's degree in library and information studies. Over the next two years, I also plan to teach English and hopefully learn some Japanese. When I return to the States I plan on becoming a librarian or corporate information specialist and might pursue further degrees in history or sociology over time."

Anna Cates:  “My next year starts with a month of work rowing a gear boat for guided fly fishing trips in Montana.  Then next fall I'll be living in Madison, Wisconsin, taking care of my grandmother for a few months.  After that I may be painting sets for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR, or I may be doing something else.”

Laurel Clark:  “I'll be joining Teach For America and teaching 4th grade in the Las Vegas Valley.  While there I'll also be taking graduate school classes at UNLV working towards a Masters in Primary Ed.”

Margaret Cody:  “This summer I'll be starting work at a marketing and brand strategy consulting firm in New York City. I hope to pursue a career in advertising or brand strategy, but if I tire of the corporate world, I may very well end up pursuing graduate degrees in American Studies or History.”

Thomas Coppock:  “I am spending the summer biking from Denmark to Greece (where I have a job).  I will be working for a year at the American Farm School outside of Thessaloniki teaching English and acting as a mentor/residential adviser at the high school there.  I don't have any plans after that.”

Nicolas de Zamaroczy:  “This summer I will continue my longstanding quest for the perfect movie popcorn by working as a concessionist at a cinema in Washington, D.C.  I will also take a few weeks off to tour Corsica, France, and Northern Italy.  The fall will find me in London, beginning a Master's in International Relations at King's College, University of London.”

Cristina Duncan Evans:  “I'll be teaching secondary school social studies in Baltimore with Teach For America.  Long term, I hope to get a master's in Museum Studies and work in Education in History Museums.”

Michael Ellis:  "I started work in March as an Associate Director in the White House Office of Strategic Initiatives in Washington, D.C.  I also plan to seek a commission as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Naval Reserves."

Tracey Fung:  “During the month of July, I will be traveling in Southeast Asia with a fellow Dartmouth student.  In August, I will begin work as a paralegal in the Anti-Trust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.  During that time, I will decide whether or not to apply to law school or other graduate school programs.”

Nikhil Gore:  “I'll be in the Singapore army for the next two years and after that law school most probably (in the U.S.).”

Lindsay Hare:  “My plans are the following: Summer travels to Idaho and China, followed by a year with Americorps Vista, working for the Chicago Rehabilitation Network (a nonprofit dedicated to developing affordable housing). After that, perhaps a move to China to work in human rights, perhaps architecture school, perhaps something entirely different!”

Jason Hartwig:  “I will be in the U.S. Army as a Tank Platoon Leader and possibly Scout Platoon Leader in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, stationed out of Fort Hood, Texas.”

Stephen Macekura:  “Next year I will be working in curriculum development for Northern Virginia public schools as part of the Primary Source Learning program, a project funded by the Library of Congress that integrates the Library's vast primary source holdings into everyday classroom instruction.  I'll also be applying to graduate programs in History.”

greenbusElliott May:  “I am the acting general manager for the 2006 Big Green Bus. We are traveling the country from June 13 to August 27.  We are a group of students committed to promoting the use of alternative energies through education and example. On a school bus converted to run on used vegetable oil, we will travel around the country fostering awareness about current global energy issues and creating dialogue about tangible solutions to those problems.  We will target most major cities in the United States, Environmental Fairs and Conventions, large venue concerts, summer camps, Dartmouth Alumni Organizations and Ultimate Frisbee Tournaments in order to reach as large and varied a population as possible.  We will maintain a website (www.thebiggreenbus.org) with photos, journal updates, an interactive map, and vodcasts to further accessibility to our project.”
