Alum News, Pre-Class of 2006

Jennifer Goldberg ’01:  “I finished my first year at Boston University School of Social Work and have one year to go.  I'm enjoying the program so far.  Classes are mostly interesting with good professors, but I think I got spoiled with the quality of teaching at Dartmouth.  My first year field placement was interesting and challenging—it was in a residential setting with mental-health clients. This coming year I'm doing my placement at Brigham and Women's Hospital, which I'm excited about, as I'd like to end up in a hospital setting after graduation.”

Jessica Leinwand ’04:  “I was recently accepted to both Harvard and Columbia [law schools], and Columbia offered me their Hamilton Fellowship, which is a full-tuition scholarship! It is also the chance to study directly with a faculty mentor and possibly research/publish with them in my 3rd year. I have not heard from Yale yet, but I think I am pretty much decided on Columbia—they have a great int'l law program.”  (7 February 2006 e-mail)

Casey Lozar ’03: “I am currently registering for my second term at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. My first term (this summer) was incredibly intense but overwhelmingly satisfying. I took courses on Adolescent Dev., Race, Class, and Power, Urban Ed., Special Education, and a methods course. As well as taking these courses I taught Ancient History at the Cambridge Harvard Summer Academy. It was a busy summer.

I am now doing my pre-practicum in Secondary History in a BPS pilot school, the Harbor School. It is an awesome environment for a novice teacher, and the school's social cohesion is impressive. I am really happy with things.

A couple days ago I was reflecting on my Marshall Islands experience (which I do several times a week) and decided that I needed to go international again and give my service to the academically needy. In light of December's tsunami and the consequential havoc reaped on Thailand, I have decided to apply to a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to Thailand.” (14 September 2005 e-mail)

Ruthie Shek ’02:  “I've recently finished a busy year of courses and completed my exams here at the London School of Economics.  Before I leave London in August, I will be spending plenty of time at the National Archives to research for my dissertation on British Hong Kong around 1949-50.  It has been very interesting (though I have to say I enjoy reading actual original documents quite a lot more than reading them on microfilm).”

Meg Thering ’05:  “I survived my first year of law school [at Columbia].  This summer I'm working for Arkin Kaplan Rice, LLP in Manhattan.  In the fall I'm going to be an editor for the Journal of Asian Law and a torts TA.  I've also been doing pro bono work at the Humane Society, and my roommates and I are going to be presidents of the ski club next year.”

Elizabeth Wise ’05:  “I am doing a post-bac pre-med program at American University. It's quite a change from my Dartmouth classes, but I'm enjoying it.”
