Seminars in History

The Department's seminar program allows small groups of students to focus on specific historical problems and to work closely with a faculty member expert in the field.

The History Department offers two kinds of seminars. First Year Seminars are restricted to first year students and do not count towards fulfilling the requirements of the Major. The wide variety of topics offered each year aims to introduce students to history and to historical procedures, often through the use of primary sources. First-year seminars in History are included in the listing of current seminars accessible from the Registrar's web site.

Upperclass Seminars are offered on a more advanced level and are usually taken in a major's junior or senior year. One must be taken to fulfill the requirements of the Major. Because seminars have limited enrollment and require the instructor's permission, it is critically important that students contact the faculty member offering the seminar at the earliest possible opportunity—even over a year before it is scheduled to be given. Instructors keep lists of students who they have assured admission to their seminar.
