The United States Civil War Center
A site based at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. It has links to over 4500 Civil War related sites. The Links index is particularly useful. Also see their statistical summary of America's major wars.

The H-CIVWAR Home Page
This site is part of the Humanities OnLine initiative that has set up discussion sites for scholars in many fields of history. H-CIVWAR is the H-Net discussion list dealing with the culture and history of the Civil War. Once again the site provides links to other civil war pages. It also has a book review section. The site is run out of Michigan State University but scholars from a variety of institutions serve on the editorial board.

The American Civil War Home Page
The University of Tennessee through their School of Information Science maintains this site. Begun in 1995 with 30 links, the site now has hundreds of links and is very easy to navigate. Link sections include general resources, battles and campaigns, documentary collections, the secession crisis, and images of the war.

The United States Military Academy
Includes an extensive collection of civil war maps showing all the major campaigns of the war. These maps are a superb resource for studying the military aspects of the war.

The History Net
Set up by the National Historical Society. Has popular history articles, many of them on the Civil War.

The American Civil War (Washington College)
An award-winning site maintained by Professor James Janke of Washington College. Provides a large number of links to other civil war sites. Nicely arranged and easy to use.

Abraham Lincoln Online
This site has a great deal of background information on Abraham Lincoln and contains speeches, writings, bibliographies, resources, and links to other sites.

Valley of the Shadow
"The Valley of the Shadow Project takes two communities, one Northern and one Southern, through the experience of the American Civil War. The project is a hypermedia archive of thousands of sources for the period before, during, and after the Civil War for Augusta County, Virginia, and Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Those sources include newspapers, letters, diaries, photographs, maps, church records, population census, agricultural census, and military records. Students can explore every dimension of the conflict and write their own histories, reconstructing the life stories of women, African Americans, farmers, politicians, soldiers, and families. The project is intended for secondary schools, community colleges, libraries, and universities."

Crisis at Fort Sumter
This is a superb site put up by Professor Latner at Tulane University. It walks you through the Fort Sumter Crisis and provides a great deal of background information.

The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
HarpWeek is the online version of Harper's Weekly. This section of the site includes extensive coverage of the 1868 Johnson Impeachment with over 200 excerpts from 1865-1869. This is an excellent and extremely useful site.

The Papers of Jefferson Davis
This site provides access to the Papers of Jefferson Davis, a project based at Rice University in Houston. The papers are published in hard copy by Louisiana State University Press. this site provides an introduction to that project and includes a number of speeches and letters by Davis, such as his Farewell Speech to the U.S. Senate in 1861.

The Furman Secession Era Editorials Project
Editorials from newspapers from across the country are gathered together on this site. They are organized around four crises of the 1850s: The Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854, the caning of Senator Sumner in 1856, the Dred Scott Decision of 1857, and John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859.

The Southern Homefront, 1861-1865
Part of "Documenting the American South" and hosted by the University of Chapel Hill Libraries, this site includes hundreds of documents, photographs, illustrations and other material on the southern homefront.

The Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant
This site includes Grant's complete memoirs with links to each chapter. The site is maintained by Professor Richard Jensen for History On-Line.
