The Iberian and Latin American Music Society (ILAMS)

ILAMS was established in London earlier this year by a committee of distinguished musicians and musicologists to promote interest in and knowledge of the music of Spain, Portugal and the countries of Latin America. No such organisation has hitherto existed in Britain, and its formation was a result of the generally held view that the music of these areas has been inadequately represented in our musical life here (Great Britain)

The Society aims to present live music where possible, in particular enabling members to appreciate unfamiliar areas of the repertoire. Joined to this programme is a commitment to give high priority to educational work. A series of Masterclasses, study sessions and Summer Schools will be organised, and a quality Journal is envisaged for the longer term. It is hoped that a performance competition will be established on an annual basis in the near future. Our First International Mastercourse was recently held in London and was a great success.

It is the declared policy of the Society to attract an international membership and to operate in an international context; for example it is anticipated that some of our summer schools and courses will be held outside the UK. We therefore welcome new members from North America. The Robert Stevenson Prize Announced

The Latin American Center for Graduate Studies in Music (LAMC) of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D. C. and the Inter-American Music Council (CIDEM), together with Inter-American Music Friends (IAMF), announce a competition for The Robert Stevenson Prize for Research in Latin American Music for works published during 1996 or 1997. The first prize consists of a Certificate of Merit and a monetary award in the amount of $7,000 (U.S. dollars). Entries must be submitted between September 1, 1998 and October 31, 1998.
