the JOKE of the WEEK
(in honor of the olympics)
Three guys were trying to sneak into the Olympic Village to scoop souvenirs and autographs. The first says, "Let's watch the registration table to see if there's a crack in the security system that we can utilize to scam our way in."
Immediately, a burly athlete walks up to the table and states, "Angus MacPherson. Scotland. Shotput." He opens his gym bag to display a shotput to the registration attendant.
The attendant says, "Very good, Mr. MacPherson. Here is your packet of registration materials, complete with hotel keys, passes to all Olympic events, meal tickets, and other information."
The first guy gets inspired and grabs a small tree sapling, strips off the limbs and roots, walks up the registration table and states: "Chuck Wagon. Canada. Javelin."
The attendant says, "Very good, Mr. Wagon. Here is your packet of registration materials, hotel keys, passes, meal tickets, and so forth. Good luck!"
The second guy grabs a street utility manhole cover, walks up to the registration table and states: "Dusty Rhodes. Australia. Discus."
The attendant says, "Terrific, Mr. Rhodes. Here is your packet of registration materials, hotel keys, a full set of passes, and meal tickets. Enjoy yourself."
They scamper in, but suddenly realize the third guy is missing. They groan, because he's a simpleton from the hills of Vermont. They forgot to make sure he doesn't do something stupid and blow their cover stories.
Just then he walks proudly up to the table with a roll of barbed wire under his arm and states: "Foster Bean. Hardwick, Vermont. Fencing."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
the JEW of the WEEK
this is a tie between the entire Hillel exec board. it might be just because of how much hillel everyone has had this weekend. or because Chiara and Jay ben were sweet in Fly. Or because Anna went hiking with me. or because Allison is finding really sweet israeli bands. sorry for the self call, but it had to happen
the GOY of the WEEK
this is also a tie. Alex Yi totally rocks for bonding with hillel over numerous bagel brunches, as well as signing up to go to six flags (and for realizing that he was the only one at bagel brunch who went to a korean sleepaway camp). Also a holler out to Christine Tian, for bringing a Jew to bagel brunch

JEWSLETTER Wednesday, Jul 30
I'm still in aftershock from how well attended this past monday's general meeting was. seriously. well done! i guess hillel+bbq=an enticing combination.
And it was also fun (hillel's always fun though. i mean always). kudos to laurel for the wonderful question game. Unfortunately, i got the worst one (seriously. what do i like to smell?) 15 slices of watermelon and some corn on the cob with fake butter later...thanks for coming!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
So what's happening this week?
Friday -12:30pm is the chance for the ultimate shmooze session (with free food!)
Come to Roth Center to meet members of the Board of Overseers and alumni (both very big deals) for an informal lunch and hear a little about plans in store for hillel
Friday 6:30/7:30 PM- Shabbat services/dinner. Rachel Gozman '10, the big time chef that she is, has already planned out the menu: salad, beef, chicken, sweet potato casserole, and for dessert--cookies and chocolate cake. Yeah, thats right.
Sunday NO BAGEL BRUNCH (it's tragic. i know)
Instead--Hillel is going to SIX FLAGS.
We're leaving from the Roth Center at 7:30am and should be back sometime during the afternoon, before dinner.
This Sunday it will be a high of 90 degrees, so get ready to rock the log flume.
all spots are taken, sorry, but if you want to get on a wait list, blitz hillel
Monday--general mtg 6 PM @Roth Center...Kicks off fieldstock the right way. the jewishy way.
Also keep your eyes out for the Hillel drive in movie event (co-sponsored by PhiDelt and SigmaDelt)

>> When your PC is multi-tasking, you would occasionally hear an "Oy Gevult."
>>Manischewitz would advertise that its "monitor cleaning solution" gets rid of the "schmutz" on your screen.
>>After 20 minutes in an idle state, your PC would go "Schloffen."
>>All computer viruses would be cured with chicken soup.
>>After your computer dies, you would have to dispose of it within 24 hours.
>>Internet Explorer would have a spinning "Star of David" in the upper right corner.
and the JEW of the week>>>
this goes to Anna Lugosch-Ecker. for being herself. and wonderful. and cutting up watermelon.
and the GOY of the week >>>
(for your reference, this is the most coveted position in the hillel-land right now, so i'll have you know that this week's goy of the week is kind of a big deal. and had a support staff)
it is JARED ZELSKI. for having perfect attendance at every hillel event since the point system came out. Also props to his brothers at phi delt for supporting him

JEWSLETTER Wednesday, Jul 23
So it's parent's weekend this weekend. and midterms are over. So now there is the dilemma, how to celebrate being done with midterms but still being your parents' golden child. Easy solution. Take them to the Roth Center Friday night and celebrate with manischewitz.
+++++++++++++-----------------------
Wednesday: jews and java 4-5:30. come get your caffeine fix (or tea or something for those who don't do caffeine) before you go back to battling campers for the prime spots on 3fb.
Wednesday: Unlocking the Talmud Discussion 7 PM @Roth Center
Rabbi Nesanel Kasnett, Dartmouth Class of 1967 and one of the editors of the Artscroll Schottenstein Talmud, will visit the Roth Center to lead a discussion and learning session on how to study Talmud. He is a graduate of Cardozo Law School, and is now a senior editor and author at Mesorah Publications. This program is organized jointly by Prof. Susannah Heschel, the UVJC, and Dartmouth Hillel.
Friday night: services and dinner 6:30/7:30 PM @Roth Center
You should definitely hit up the dinner with your family. Rachel Gozman cooks everything from scratch and it's DELICIOUS. She makes the tastiest chicken. this week she's making chicken AND LAMB. i mean where else will you get free lamb?
If you have even the smallest inclination to come, rsvp to hillel! this in no way shape or form is a commitment to coming, we just like planning how much food to make!
Sunday: Bagel Brunch 1 PM @Roth Center
Still my favorite time of the week. this is when i breathe a sigh of relief that my parents came, left, and still think i'm a responsible human being.
Monday: Hillel General Meetings 6pm @Roth Center.
this will be a BBQ! and this time your hot dog buns will not be frozen (hey mark, we won't need your fabulous microwaving techniques)
who doesn't love kosher meat?
and a reminder:
six flags trip--Sunday, Aug. 3 leave early (7:30am ish) in morning, get back before dinner
blitz hillel to rsvp ASAP!
six flags = amazing way to cure the aftermath of masters, recover from the fifty, study for your genetics midterm, hang out with some sweet people

some interesting lecture/discussions coming up.
Tuesday, July 29th: ***THE FUTURE OF ISRAEL: A CONVERSATION WITH BERNARD AVISHAI***
Bernard Avishai, the author of the recently published book, The Hebrew Republic: How Secular Democracy and Global Enterprise Will Bring Israel Peace at Last, will talk about his book and his vision of Israel's future. He is a contributing editor to the Harvard Business Review, former professor at Duke and MIT, longtime contributor to the New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, Harper's and many other publications, and is a seminal thinker on Israeli politics and society.

Joke of the Week
i have a lot of issues finding good jokes. i know. i'm pathetic. apologies.
so in light of the general meeting monday, here are some questions that laurel wanted to ask, but decided might get really awkward answers....
+what do you keep in the trunk of your car? (so there's a weird smell? noises? dead body.)
+What punctuation mark best describes your personality? Why? (you're a hyphen? what?....ohhhh uhh)
+If you had to describe your day as a traffic sign, what would it be? (please never tell me it's the 'dangerous curves ahead'. or 'duck crossing')
+If you had to enter a competition for the "Most Uselessly Unique Talent," what would your talent be? (so you can crack your pinkie toe. wow)
+ if you were to perform in the circus, what would you do? (you think you can juggle while riding a unicycle across a tight rope? sure)
Jew of the Week
this is a tie.
Rachel Gozman- for making the best chicken i've ever had while in New Hampshire
Rabbi - for taking care of the congregants friday night and volunteering to help cook next friday
Goy of the Week
Batman. and Heath Ledger (RIP). what a fabulous movie
PS there may/may not be a points system for Goy/Jew of the week. if you're interested in learning more, blitz me at ELIZAR
+++++++++++++-----------------------
apparently now Hillel has a mailbag. if you have anything to say, please blitz hillel. even if you have nonsense
here is a letter from a jew on campus to hillel in response to the last jewsletter.
++--
This letter needs a mailbox. How am I supposed to send in inane comments and banter when I'm not officially informed by the letter itself that I'm to blitz in with senseless and less than creative commentary??
Also, I'm tired of Jews and Java being on wednesday from 2-5. I ( and probably 105% of the rest of campus) have lab during that time and can't come to make campus organizations pay for my caffine fix. Now I have to go to Novac at 5 and chug a large coffee in 35 seconds while walking to the other "important" things I have to do (aka take a nap...). But seriously, If you move Jews and Java to Sunday at 10pm... I won't be there. MTV is showing the newest episode of G's to Gents and now that "The Truth" is gone, the competition is up in the air.
Oh... and Phi Delt's pool exploded last night. Seriously, exploded. Normally I would blame Germany but in this case I'm pretty sure it was Thailand. They've had it out for us since that poor showing at the Thaiwaneese Free Trade Association meeting last March. As near perpetual goys of the week, we demand that a Hillel action committee be set up to investigate the goings on. Maybe hire some spies or something.. I hear the dark haired James Bonds are looking for work.
I'm calling all of you out... seriously someone think of something creative and or funny to say so that I don't have to. Look what you get when you wait for inspiration from me...
Seriously though... no... I've got nothing.
-GoyMench
+++++++++++++-----------------------
ttyl. see you around
Comments or questions about Jewsletter? Blitz Hillel or Elizar
JEWSLETTER Thursday, Jul 17
Sorry this is a little late. but what better way to wake up from a crazy wednesday night (shebalite? lone pine? 3fb w/ campers? meetings?) than with the jewsletter? i mean it's nicer than waking up to a blitz saying that someone killed you in the assassin game while you were out.
so what's happening THIS WEEK:
Shabbat Services and Dinner on Friday night are happening as usual...6:30/7:30 pm at the roth center.
Bagel Brunch on Sunday at 1pm at the roth center. (my fave part of the week)
and of course...General Hillel meetings at Monday at 6pm. you should come, they're really fun...just ask the goys of the week
A reminder:
Hillel is sponsoring a trip to Six Flags New England
it's Sunday August 3rd, and we're leaving early in the morning, around 7:45 AM so that we beat the crowd and can leave the park early enough to be back on campus for dinner time.
you'll be done with the fifty, and you probably won't make it very far in masters.... so why not come?
please blitz hillel NOW if you want to come
kthanks
so now the joke of the week:
Monte goes to a kosher deli to meet his good friend, Herschel.
As the two friends greet each other, Herschel notices that Monte has golden teeth. He asks Monte about them.
"Oh,I just got them! I have seven pairs!"
"Seven? Why would you ever need seven pairs?!" Herschel gasped.
"Well, I have one set for meat, one set for dairy, and another set for parve," Monte explained.
"What about the others?"
"Well, as you know, on Pesach you need separate sets of things. So on Pesach I use one for meat,
one for dairy, and another for parve."
Herschel was astonished. "What about the seventh set?"
Momte shrugges. "Well, now and then I like to have a ham sandwhich."
And the jew of the week?
MICHAEL BROWN. our wonderful houseman is not only an ace swimmer, but apparently cleans kitchens like a pro.
The goy of the week?
this goes to all those fabulous friends who were not jewish, but still came to hillel meetings last monday.
oh and phidelt can have it again too. apparently it's now a phidelt house event to come to shabbat dinner and bagel brunch.
And then some other business...

***TWO ISRAELI CAMP COUNSELORS INTERESTED IN SHABBAT DINNER***
This summer the Girl Scout's Camp Farnsworth in Thetford has two Israeli camp counselors. If you'd like to host them, please call Megan Chamberlain at 802-785-2171.

GRAPPLING WITH JUDAISM AND CHRISTIANITY
GREAT event on July 11 and 12 @Haldeman Building Room 041
Franz Rosenzweig went to Yom Kippur services on October 11, 1913 at a small Orthodox shul in Berlin, fully intending to convert to Christianity afterward. He emerged a committed Jew, and went on to inhabit a prominent place in the pantheon of great thinkers about the meaning of Judaism in the 20th century. On July 11 and 12, Dartmouth will host a conference on the relationship between Rosenzweig and the friend who almost convinced him to convert, Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy--who went on to teach philosophy at Dartmouth from 1935 until 1957.
The conference will include sessions on Rosenstock-Huessy's philosophy and on the challenges posed by the correspondence between the two men, which one
scholar once described as "the purest form of Judaeo-Christian dialogue ever attained, perhaps even for ages to come."
The conference is sponsored by the Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy Fund in cooperation with Professor Susannah Heschel. All are welcome. For further information, please get in touch with Prof. Heschel by email at susannah.heschel@Dartmouth.EDU.

for the joke of the week...i'm saluting a different type of hero,
THE JEWISH MOTHER. i mean we all have them. and thanks to them...
1. we're here. 2. we have warm clothes to survive the hanover winter (i mean last year for chanukah my mom gave me some long underwear) and 3. we get a lot of phone calls.
Q: Why don't Jewish mothers drink?
A: Alcohol interferes with their suffering.
Q: Why do Jewish Mothers make great parole officers?
A: They never let anyone finish a sentence.
A Jewish boy comes home from school and tells his mother he's been given a part in the school play.
"Wonderful. What part is it?"
The boy says,"I play the part of the Jewish husband."
The mother scowls and says, "Go back and tell the teacher you want a speaking part."
Q: What did the waiter ask the group of dining Jewish mothers?
A: 'Is ANYTHING all right?'
And of course
The Jew of the Week
=* JAY BEN MARKSON (because he was kind of Hillel's hero when he accepted the position of vp religion/education...even though he's taking the most time intensive class i've ever heard of)
And
the Goy of the Week
=*umm can anyone say George Washington? or maybe the grill master from monday, Jimmy...

If you have a car and can tutor B'nai Mitzvah students, have I got a job for you!
Camp Walt Whitman in Piermont, NH is looking for a few tutors for some of their campers. Hillel has been providing CWW with tutors for the last 5-6 years and those who do it love the job. The pay is quite good (don't really know what it is, but I know its good). Anyone who is interested should contact Claudia Palmer with any questions and she'd be happy to give you the phone numbers.
You won't be disappointed! Please respond asap (because camp has already started...) :-)
