Some suggestions for finding a research mentor:

  1. Do some homework: Go to the web, using the links provided above, to see what types of research are performed by faculty members in the Biology department, or look for faculty who do life science related research in the other departments listed above. In recent years, HHMI interns have worked with professors in Chemistry, Psychological & Brain Sciences, Geography, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Thayer School, and the Dartmouth Medical School.
  2. Talk to everyone who will listen: set up appointments with faculty who do research that interests you, go to office hours when you are taking biology courses to get advice about who might be an appropriate advisor, ask your graduate student teaching assistants (TAs) about their advisors or other potential mentors, and ask other undergraduates who are doing research for their advice.
  3. Then do some more homework:  Decide on a few faculty mentors whose work interests you.  Familiarize yourself with what they are doing by reading the research related information provided at their web site, maybe even look at a few of their scholarly publications.  Then call them or e-mail them about the possibility of being an HHMI intern in their lab.  If they invite you to come and chat about it further, arrive at your interview knowledgeable about their work and be ready to tell them why you want to be an intern in their lab.

When you have identified a research mentor willing to sponsor your HHMI internship, the next step is to fill out the application.
