Students Against the Abuse of Food and Exercise (SAFE) is an eating
disorders outreach group started by students who felt a need for increased
eating disorders awareness and outreach on campus. SAFE meets several times
throughout the term and coordinates projects aimed at raising eating disorders
and body image concerns awareness. SAFE achieves this through sponsoring
programs, such as speakers, on campus and through assorted projects meant to
draw student and community attention to the problem of eating disorders.
Probably SAFE's greatest accomplishment, was the compilation of a booklet of
personal accounts and struggles with eating disorders among Dartmouth students
and their families. Once completed, the booklet was distributed throughout the
student body and to campus administrators. SAFE annually sponsors an event at
which students read their own or others' stories from the booklet. This program
has been consistently well-attended, reflecting the community's support for
SAFE and its cause. The creation of the booklet would not have been possible if
not for the generous contributions made to SAFE by its sponsors, the class of
1963. The Class of '63 has continued to support SAFE since the booklet's
construction and their support has been vital to SAFE's success.
