GSC Funding

Quicklink:

In addition to funding traditionally popular parties, social gatherings, family-oriented events, and community service, the GSC also funds the following initiatives:

  • Gift certificates for students who volunteer as Sober Monitors
  • Discounted movie tickets at the Nugget
  • Conference Grants for students presenting at conferences. Want to apply? Please follow directions specified on the GSC Conference Grant Application.

Want to suggest an event to be regularly hosted? Blitz the GSC!

If you who would like to host an event on a per-event basis, applying for a funding request may be worth considering. Please see below for details.

I. Funding Request Requirements

Funds may be requested from the Graduate Student Council by any individual(s) or group(s) of graduate students. All events must be open to the Dartmouth graduate student community as a whole, and funds will not be approved for events retroactively. If your request is approved, any events will be posted on the "Graduate Student Activities" BlitzMail bulletin. For more details, please see Article IV of the GSC Bylaws.

II. Funding Options

If you or your group is planning an event, then submit your request via our Funding Request Form.

Further details are given on the request forms themselves, though a couple of points are worth noting here:

  • Any event request under $250 will be considered via "Fast Track" approval. You will receive an approval/denial response within 6 days of your request.
  • Any event request over $250 will be considered at the monthly GSC meeting. The request must be submitted at least 72 hours before the meeting (i.e. prior to 8:30 AM on the day before the meeting takes place).
  • Any event request over $250 that is not submitted in time to be considered at the monthly GSC meeting, (1) the funding request must be submitted at least 7 days before the event takes place; (2) the funding request cannot exceed $500; and (3) the general council can only approve/disapprove the funding request by at least 50% assuming quorum + 1 vote via e-mail within the allotted voting period.

See Funding Request Form for specific details.

III. Guidelines

There are a number of different factors that impact the funding process, and not all of them are immediately obvious. With this in mind, be sure to consider the following tips when making a request:

  • If the request is to be considered at a GSC meeting, please note that (1) the Event Funding Request Form must be submitted at least 72 hours before the meeting; (2) a representative must be present at the meeting to briefly explain the event and answer relevant questions.
  • Events funded by the GSC should be promoted to all graduate students (via blitz, D2D, posters, etc.) and be open to all graduate students. Events that do not meet these requirements may result in reduced or revoked funding or no funding for the next year.
  • Organizations seeking funding to run their meetings (e.g. equipment, office supplies, etc.) need to (1) provide a brief description of the organization; (2) actively promote activities, e.g. an email going out to all graduate students describing their organization and inviting graduate students to take part; (3) be listed on the GSC website as an organization that welcomes the participation of all graduate students.
  • The GSC is highly unlikely to approve funds for events that provide alcohol at off-campus or private venues, as per the college alcohol policy. (For more information, please consult the current guidelines(pdf) for graduate social events, as well as the College Alcohol Policy.)
  • The GSC may choose to only partially fund a request.
