Diversity Discussions at Sigma Phi Epsilon
by Mark Bubriski Sigma Phi Epsilon hosted two fantastic non-alcoholic programming events before Thanksgiving this term, intending to promote discussion health awareness and issues of diversity. First, the sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., brought one part of their week-long "Skee-Week" to Sig Ep's home at 11 Webster Avenue. Co-sponsored by the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., also, the event entitled "Body Right, Body Tight," focused on men's health. The excellent turnout of over 40 people was entertained by the frank and in-depth candor of two medical professionals. Bryant Ford, a Dick's House counselor, spoke and fielded questions on depression, stress and anxiety, followed by Dr. Neil Mercer of DHMC, who spoke and also answered some very detailed questions about men's sexual health. All that attended seemed to very much enjoy the hour-long discussion. And, less than a week later, Sig Ep also hosted MOSAIC, Dartmouth's student organization for people of biracial, bicultural, multiracial and multicultural backgrounds. Members of MOSAIC and Sig Ep enjoyed a showing of "Save the Last Dance," an MTV movie about a young white woman who falls in love with a young black man after bonding over their mutual love for dancing. The discussion that followed the movie proved to be quite candid and, at times, quite humorous as the members of both groups spoke about their different experiences with interracial relationships on campus. |
