2005 Graduate Faculty Mentor Award-Winners

The Graduate Student Council and the Office of Graduate Studies are pleased to announce the winners of the Graduate Faculty Mentoring award. The three winners are: Ann Clark, Psychological Brain Sciences; Ross Virginia, Environmental Studies; and Dorothy Wallace, Mathematics. This  award was created by the Graduate Student Council to recognize and highlight the outstanding mentoring activities that are undertaken by faculty advisors at Dartmouth. The selected winners each had several nominations addressing their positive attributes as mentors. Ann Clark, Ross Virginia, and Dorothy Wallace each individually exemplify outstanding qualities as mentors to their graduate students.  We would like to highlight some of the attributes that make them excellent mentors.

A graduate alum describes how she benefited by having Ann as a mentor: “As I was finishing my degree which can be trying for anyone, Ann was always there as a voice of reason. She encouraged me as a woman, as a scientist, and as a friend. On those days when I felt as though I would never graduate, Ann was there encouraging me with her words of wisdom.”

Another graduate nomination letter addresses Ross Virginia attributes as a mentor. Ross, “recognized my desire to continue my education and did everything that he could to make this possible. His confidence in my abilities and in the value of my research contributions has been overwhelmingly encouraging.”

A current graduate student nominated Dorothy Wallace because, “Making a positive difference is at the heart of Dorothy's absolute dedication and mentoring talent. Her empowering attitude is contagiously inspiring. She is a model of creativity, an endless encouragement to never give up on my dreams and a brilliant supporter and sustainer both in my life and research, a marvelous teacher.”

By recognizing these three outstanding mentors we hope to highlight the enormous contribution they have made to graduate students. In addition, we would like to acknowledge all of the faculty members who were nominated by their students. Numerous graduate alumni and graduate students wrote letters of nomination for their faculty mentors. The letters truly spoke of the wonderful mentoring occurring at Dartmouth.
