Announcement of the Graduate Faculty Mentoring Awards 2009

The Graduate Student Council and the Office of Graduate Studies are pleased to announce the winners of the Graduate Faculty Mentoring award. The two winners are: David Bucci, Psychological Brain Sciences and Mary Lou Guerinot, Molecular and Cellular Biology. This award was created by the Graduate Student Council to recognize and highlight the outstanding mentoring activities that are undertaken by faculty advisors at Dartmouth. David and Mary Lou each individually exemplify outstanding qualities as mentors to their graduate students, and each had several nominations addressing these qualities.Faculty Mentor Award

A Psychological and Brain Sciences graduate student nominated David because the student feels that "Dave manages to strike a great balance between allowing his graduate students to work independently while keeping tabs on our progress to make sure we don't lose momentum or get off-track." This student also describes Dave as "very supportive when it comes to presenting research, he takes the time to listen to practice talks and is always ready with constructive feedback...He is truly a top-notch mentor and advisor, and deserves to be recognized for his dedication and commitment to graduate students."

Faculty Mentor AwardA Molecular and Cellular Biology graduate student described in their nomination letter how students have benefited by having Mary Lou as a mentor. "It is always clear that Mary Lou's students are the top priority, whether it be the time she spends working directly with you to figure out a confusing result, the effort she makes to help connect you better in your field for future success or even the extra work she creates for herself giving you opportunities to learn from writing articles, giving presentations and more."

By recognizing these two outstanding mentors we hope to highlight the enormous contribution they have made to our graduate community. In addition, we would like to acknowledge all of the faculty members who were nominated by their students. Numerous graduate alumni and graduate students wrote letters of nomination for their faculty mentors, speaking to the wonderful mentoring occurring at Dartmouth on a daily basis.
