An institution-wide program of training in the basics of professional ethics for first year graduate students
Greetings!
Congratulations from the Graduate Studies Office on your admittance to one of Dartmouth College’s Graduate Programs. We are looking forward to meeting you this fall at Graduate Student Orientation. This past summer, you should have received an e-mail letter from your department outlining the new graduate ethics program. Now that you are on campus, we would like to provide you with more details.
The Graduate Studies Office, in collaboration with the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth, has developed an institution-wide training program in the basics of professional ethics. This program is a requirement for all first-year Arts and Sciences graduate students. The Graduate Ethics Program has four components: an opening session during orientation, a graduate student ethics survey, and four small group discussions addressing focal topics during the first year of graduate school.
The first component incorporates an ethics session into Graduate Student Orientation. Aine Donovan, Executive Director of the Ethics Institute, facilitates an interactive discussion, using case study scenes from Robert Martin's play, "Stampede of Zebras." The play focuses on a devastating case of scientific misconduct and its aftermath. Current students perform four key scenes. Dr. Donovan then facilitates a panel discussion on various ethical dilemmas in the play. All incoming students are required to attend this session on Monday, September 24 @ 6:30 pm in Filene Auditorium, Moore Hall.
The second component requires all Arts and Sciences graduate students to complete an ethics survey. The ethics survey asks that you read "Sources: Their Use and Acknowledgement" and the Honor Principle and Code of Conduct. Once you have read both documents, you are asked to complete the survey recognizing that you have read and understand both documents. Each student accepts Dartmouth’s Honor Principle and Code of Conduct upon registering as an Arts and Sciences graduate student. A student found in violation of the Honor Principle or Code of Conduct forfeits his/her right to continue at Dartmouth. Please go to http://www.dartmouth.edu/~gradstdy/grdethics.html to complete the survey. The survey must be completed by November 1, 2007 in order for you to register for the following term.
The third component involves trained facilitators meeting with a small group of first year students to discuss ethical dilemmas potentially facing graduate students. Students must sign-up for one group in Banner. You may sign-up by selecting a CRN Key Number or search by the subject UNSG 100. Before selecting a group, students may review a list of facilitators (and their assigned CRN Key Numbers) leading the discussions this term. We encourage you to join a group led by a facilitator from your department if available. Please make sure you can attend all four sessions listed with the facilitator. Those who miss a session will have to attend a make-up session or risk not receiving graduate funding. Thayer graduate students should enroll with the Thayer School Registrar, Daryl Laware. As a finale to the facilitated ethics sessions, the Graduate Studies Office together with the Ethics Institute will host a science ethics colloquium in the spring.

All Arts and Sciences first year graduate students must complete the Graduate Ethics Survey once they arrive on campus (and have a Dartmouth email account).
