Faculty Mentoring Award 2007

The Graduate Student Council and the Graduate Studies Office are pleased to announce the winners of the Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award. This year’s award recipients are: Duane Compton, Professor of Biochemistry and Randy Noelle, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. The Faculty Mentoring award was created by the Graduate Student Council to recognize the outstanding mentoring activities that are undertaken by faculty advisors at Dartmouth. The selected award winners each had several nominations addressing their positive attributes as mentors. We would like to highlight some of the attributes that exemplify their outstanding mentorship.

Among Professor Compton’s nomination letters, one graduate student describes how he benefits by having him as a mentor. “What is particularly unique about his mentoring style is his ability to strike a rare and yet crucial balance between providing consistent help to his students without compromising their abilities to think independently. Regardless of how frequently I walked into his office, he has never expressed any signs of dismay to my interruptions. He truly exemplifies Dartmouth’s open door policy and close faculty-student contact.”

In support of Professor Noelle’s nomination, another graduate student writes, “Randy’s passion for science and support of his students fosters an active research group where the sky is the limit. He is ever open minded to new ideas we present and helps us refine and hone in on the fundamental questions so as to create the most logical experimental design. He is a sounding board, a bastion of knowledge and a friend.”

By recognizing these two exceptional mentors, we hope to highlight the important contributions they have made to graduate student training. In addition, we would like to acknowledge all of the faculty members who were nominated by their students. Numerous graduate alumni and graduate students wrote letters of nomination for their faculty mentors. The letters truly spoke of the wonderful mentoring occurring at Dartmouth.
