Welcome from the Dean

Greetings and welcome to the Graduate Studies Website! I have been a faculty member, teacher and graduate student advisor at Dartmouth since 1994. Some of my most rewarding experiences have been through interactions with graduate students and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented and creative group. I believe our graduate students are tremendously enriching members of the academic community at Dartmouth and consider it a privilege to serve as Dean of Graduate Studies. My goals are to attract the best and brightest graduate students to Dartmouth, provide a stimulating and collegial environment, and ensure that we train our students for outstanding careers. Dartmouth offers a number of exciting graduate programs and training opportunities that I would like to introduce to you.

There are currently 17 Doctoral programs and 7 Masters programs at Dartmouth with an enrollment of over 600 students that are drawn from diverse educational backgrounds. Graduate programs at Dartmouth emphasize close student-faculty ties, rigorous research and scholarship, and excellence in teaching. The typical graduate program consists of highly interactive groups of faculty, postdoctoral associates, graduate students and technical support staff. Specific degree requirements vary from one department to another, however, the overarching goal is the same: to offer a program which provides guided study for strength and breadth within the discipline, combined with an excellent program of research at the frontier of knowledge. As a key part of their training, students learn to conceive, design and write competitive research proposals, and a growing number of Dartmouth graduate students have been recipients of nationally recognized research awards.

Dartmouth is an institution that has always placed priorities on excellence in teaching and scholarship. Many of our doctoral recipients go on to careers in academic fields. In keeping with this tradition, a strong teaching experience is an integral part of the Ph.D. programs. The teaching experience is designed to give student supervised involvement in teaching duties. Finally, as Dartmouth Graduate programs grow and diversify, and as opportunities for our degree recipients expand, we continually seek to supplement the specialization commonly associated with graduate study. Several initiatives are underway to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration, educate our students on future career opportunities and enhance the quality of life for the graduate student popluation. This is an exciting time for graduate studies at Dartmouth and I hope that you will come to enjoy your time here as much as I have enjoyed mine.

With best wishes,

Charles Barlowe

Dean of Graduate Studies
