The Graduate Studies Office is announcing the increased funding for individual student travel awards of up to $1000 per student for those enrolled in PhD programs or stipend supported Masters programs. This funding is supplied to facilitate presentation of the student’s work at a relevant research conference. The mechanism previously existed, but the amount available has now doubled from the previous $500 per student. This is a one time award of up to the $1000 maximum, and should be used only when the primary advisor or department does not have sufficient funding to support the conference travel.
Conference attendance and presentation of original research is a central part of research-scholar studies, because active engagement with peer researchers at other institutions is an essential part of the research process. Enrolled PhD students and those in stipend supported Masters programs are encouraged to take part if travel funding is needed. If a previous award was given to an existing student under the previous $500 policy, they are now eligible to apply for an additional $500 travel award if they are enrolled in the same program.
